In reading in Exodus about the ten commandments, I was reminded that I used to think they were hogwash. I thought they were for the people of that day, not for me. So I broke every single one of them. If it weren’t for the love God has for me and Jesus dying on the cross for me, you can bet on judgment day I would stand before them GUILTY as charged and would be put into a hand basket headed straight for hell. I am a sinner. Through and through. In my study bible, it really lays out the commandments as they were spoken to Moses on Mount Sinai, but also what Jesus had to say about them. So I am going to share how this affects me.
#1 – Exodus 20:3 – You shall have no other gods before me.
Matthew 4:10 – Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.
I worshiped a lot of gods other than the One True God. I worshiped drugs, money, time, things, people, homes, cars, cell phones….the list goes on and on. It’s hard to see it at the time, but anything that comes before the Lord is a mini-god. I have to check myself daily. GUILTY
#2 – Exodus 20:4-6 – You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, and a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
Luke 16:13 – No one can serve two masters.
This goes with #1. Putting things like money and inanimate objects and people ahead of what God wanted for me. I concentrated too much on “things” for personal identity and meaning. GUILTY
#3 – Exodus 20:7 – You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
Matthew 5:34 – But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all; either by heaven, for it is God’s throne.
Blasphemy at it’s finest. Throwing His sacred name around to prove a point. The point is that it made me sound silly and ignorant. GUILTY
#4 – Exodus 20:8 – Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
Mark 2:27-28 – The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord, even on the Sabbath.
I need to spend unhurried time in worship and rest each week. But how many times, even on Sundays, do I forget to take it easy? There is so much rushing around that I forget to take in what is happening around me, that people are being set free, that God is at work in my life and the lives of those within arms reach. God is not in THAT and there is no rest in that either. GUILTY.
#5 – Exodus 20:12 – Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
Matthew 10:37 – Anyone who loves their father and mother more than me is not worthy of me.
Whew…where do I start? I threw off my belief of God after my dad died, so I loved everything and everyone ahead of him. I loved my story about my dad and was addicted to it. I put him over God every day. I also loved my parents, but I did not honor them. I fought them at every turn unless I needed something then I sung their praises. GUILTY.
#6 – Exodus 20:13 – You shall not murder.
Matthew 5:22 – Anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment.
I have never actually killed anyone, but I have killed them in my heart. I refused to forgive, so they were in turn dead to me. GUILTY.
#7 – Exodus 20:14 – You shall not commit adultery.
Matthew 5:28 – Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Yes, I committed adultery. More than once. Am I proud of that? Absolutely not. But it happened. GUILTY.
#8 – Exodus 20:15 – You shall not steal
Matthew 5:40 – If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.
I have shoplifted, I have stolen from friends, I have stolen from family, I have stolen from strangers. All to support a habit that was slowly killing me physically and emotionally. GUILTY.
#9 – Exodus 20:16 – You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
Matthew 12:36 – Everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken.
What I say reveals what is in my heart. And I have lied on people in order to make myself look better. It has also been done to me. I have spoken so negatively over my own life that I believe I spoke some things that happened to me right into existence. Lying to myself, lying to others, falsifying information, this list goes on and on. GUILTY.
#10 – Exodus 20:17 – You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.
Luke 12:15 – Be on your guard against all kinds of greed.
JEALOUSY!!! There it is. Wishing and hoping and even praying for the same blessings that I see others have. GUILTY.
NOW FOR THE GOOD NEWS!! Like I said before, I should be going straight to hell. In Moses time, people would have to sacrifice animals and pour their blood on the altar and even on themselves in order to get to God. It symbolized their covenant with the Lord. It also symbolized that one life had been given for another and the penalty for their sin had been paid and they could be reunited with God. Jesus was OUR sacrificial lamb, spotless and without blemish.
Exodus 14:14 – The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.

To further your reading, and to dive a bit deeper, consider this from Romans 5:6, 8-10 – You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 8 But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since we have now been justified by His blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through Him! 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life!
I was far too weak and rebellious to do anything to get ready for salvation. I wouldn’t have known what to do anyway. I was no use to God but He loved me anyway. My life will continue to expand and deepen by means of Jesus’ resurrected life!! He hung on the cross and shed His blood so that our sins could be wiped away and we could walk into the throne room, NOT GUILTY!!!!
1 Peter 2:24-25 – “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” 25 For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
