I used to think that I could never be set free. Temptations would come at me and I would jump on them like they were running away with precious things of mine. I tackled temptation head on. Because it FELT GOOD to be bad. Silly, right?!?! I was so entangled by my sin, that I found pleasure in things that were killing me. It wasn’t until the pain exceeded the pleasure that I realized there was something very, very wrong with me. The pain of my consequences was there even while I was trying to seek pleasure. I was being haunted by the repercussions of my actions on a minute by minute basis. I was lost. I was hungry, I was angry, I was lonely, and I was tired. Time to HALT and seek the face of Jesus. Temptations are still there. The devil doesn’t come to you with his red face and horns, he comes to you disguised as everything you ever wanted. That is truth! There is always an open door. It is a way out of every sticky situation we find ourselves in. Sometimes it isn’t very easy to find, especially in our culture (or pit) of sin-inducing pressures.
Hosea 6:10-7:2 – I have seen a horrible thing in Israel:
There Ephraim is given to prostitution,
Israel is defiled.
“Whenever I would restore the fortunes of my people,
7 1 whenever I would heal Israel,
the sins of Ephraim are exposed
and the crimes of Samaria revealed.
They practice deceit,
thieves break into houses,
bandits rob in the streets;
2 but they do not realize
that I remember all their evil deeds.
Their sins engulf them;
they are always before me.
How silly are we to think that God doesn’t see and doesn’t know? All temptation is common to ALL mankind, meaning I am not alone. I may feel like I am the only one going through things but it is COMMON to all man. So there are others who face temptations just as I do? I would be selfish to think it’s all about me! But I have thought that way before. When we fail at things, or think we fail, we put pictures back up on the mud wall of our pits and decorate the floors with lavish rugs. Why?
Running from temptation is heroic in my eyes. I KNOW when I am being tempted. It’s not a secret, I just pretend it is. The problem comes when I see the BIG open door with bells and whistles and this lights up like the forth of July in radiant colors! What I fail to see if I choose to walk through it is the tiny little with it’s unpretentious frame, its modest handle, and its minimal adornments. That’s my way out and sometimes it is uncomfortable, so I choose to stay stuck. However, we cannot stay where we are and go with God at the same time. I would rather run in circles in a room with it’s big fancy door offering my temptation as long as I am running away than to step through it. Eventually I will find the right door because God says it is there and I believe His Word.

1 Corinthians 10:12-13 – So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
I live in a sinful world and evil is all around me. I can avoid tempting situations and concentrate on obeying God but I have to be able to put Him FIRST in all I do!! I have to stand in front of that beautiful door with it’s flashing lights and pray for Him to show me the way. And He will!!!!
