There was a time at Jacob’s Well Recovery Center and Asa spoke in that devotion and something so profound that it took my breath away. He said, “Beware of what you become in pursuit of what you want.” He left us to talk amongst ourselves on that topic and the girl next to me said she had never really pursued ANYTHING, but she had. Like countless other women at Jacob’s Well, she pursued with all her might, relentlessly, the drugs and lifestyle that nearly killed her. Sometimes we pursue things that aren’t originally on the table, things that are completely new and foreign, sometimes positive things that still distract us from our purpose. Both she and I lost ourselves in the process of the relentless pursuit.
2 Chronicles 12:1-2 (NIV) – After Rehoboam’s position as king was established and he had become strong, he and all Israel with him abandoned the law of the Lord. 2 Because they had been unfaithful to the Lord, Shishak king of Egypt attacked Jerusalem in the fifth year of King Rehoboam.
We open ourselves up for attack when we forget where our blessings come from. Rehoboam, the king of Judah, did make an attempt to follow God in a fallen world, but as he peaked in popularity and power, he abandoned God and ran in his own strength. When everything is going right, that is when I need to guard my faith closely and steer clear of self-sufficiency. Confession and humility open the to receiving mercy. When I leave God out of my life and my plans, I lose myself spiritually.
Outer beauty has to come from inner strength and the only way to be strong is to seek the Lord in ALL my pursuits. The army against me is mighty, but God is stronger. I have to recognize my limitations in order to do the best I can and allow Him to do the rest.
I will never have to face anything alone. When I look for God in the midst of the moment, it goes against the grain of the world. As long as I stay in the Word, absorb His teaching, and turn back to Him, the enemy is defeated in every pursuit.

James 4:7-10 (MSG) – So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet.
