Job 18:1-21 – Then Bildad the Shuhite replied:
2 “When will you end these speeches?
Be sensible, and then we can talk.
3 Why are we regarded as cattle
and considered stupid in your sight?
4 You who tear yourself to pieces in your anger,
is the earth to be abandoned for your sake?
Or must the rocks be moved from their place 5 “The lamp of a wicked man is snuffed out;
the flame of his fire stops burning.
6 The light in his tent becomes dark;
the lamp beside him goes out.
7 The vigor of his step is weakened;
his own schemes throw him down.
8 His feet thrust him into a net;
he wanders into its mesh.
9 A trap seizes him by the heel;
a snare holds him fast.
10 A noose is hidden for him on the ground;
a trap lies in his path.
11 Terrors startle him on every side
and dog his every step.
12 Calamity is hungry for him;
disaster is ready for him when he falls.
13 It eats away parts of his skin;
death’s firstborn devours his limbs.
14 He is torn from the security of his tent
and marched off to the king of terrors.
15 Fire resides in his tent;
burning sulfur is scattered over his dwelling.
16 His roots dry up below
and his branches wither above.
17 The memory of him perishes from the earth;
he has no name in the land.
18 He is driven from light into the realm of darkness
and is banished from the world.
19 He has no offspring or descendants among his people,
no survivor where once he lived.
20 People of the west are appalled at his fate;
those of the east are seized with horror.
21 Surely such is the dwelling of an evil man;
such is the place of one who does not know God.”
1. How many times do people come into our lives just to smash us down and tear us apart and ultimately reject ANY TRUTHS we are saying about our OWN circumstances & life just because it doesn’t fit with THEIR outlook on how things should be?
PONDER THAT FOR A MOMENT
2. Are you taking personal responsibility for YOUR OWN shortcomings?
My addiction took me places I never belonged, designer drugs were traded for hard core street drugs when the high was no longer satisfying my desire to run from myself and the depression that wracked my entire spiritual being, it cost me more than I could pay, and kept me longer than I wanted to stay. I was stuck and saw no way out, so I used that as an excuse to stay checked out of life as well. Hindsight is 20/20 and looking back I can clearly see the lies that entered my spirit long before I ever took the first drug or ingested the first drink. Excuses are the bricks that build a house of failure and I was full of them. More was never enough.
My addiction was also triggered by my inability to cope with life in general. I had a desire to feel accepted from a very young age. My dad had gone to prison when I was in the 5th grade and needless to say, my entire life as I knew it was thrown up into the air and landed back on the ground not even resembling the way it was before. It was a nightmare of epic proportions in the mind of an intuitive adolescent girl who thrived in controlled environments. The spirits of rejection and abandonment took over my life and my being. The thing is I realize now that life is all about choices. Was I able to make choices about my future at such a young age? No. Was I able to grasp the reality of what was taking place in the peripherals? Absolutely not. Was I able to truly handle the deceit of the person I trusted the most? No way. However, I was able to make decisions as I grew older, and I feel like “triggers” are just another pretext used to check out of life. I made my own choices. I stepped in my own holes. There is no real justification for why I chose a path of self destruction, other than I just did. To place blame on ANYTHING would be completely unfair. I stood there for the majority of my adult life, blame-thrower in hand, ready to fire. I triggered myself.
3. Do you trust God when things go wrong even when you know you have done everything right?
4. Are you listening to the heresy and staying stuck in your pit of regret and self-pity?
5. Are you allowing YOUR shortcoming to take you out of everything you used to love?
YOUR shortcoming! Not the person you THINK is responsible for your feelings. We are responsible for our own feelings and what we choose to take us out. We choose to get up, get dressed, brush our teeth, take a bath….why can’t we choose our feelings?
6. Are you hanging up pictures on the mud walls? Have you put a rug down on the dirt floor? Are you comfortable and complacent in your pit?
I was a tornado, ripping through the hearts of every “city” that I came in contact with. Each “city” represents a person, their feelings, and their love toward me. People came, and people left and they left due to their own inability to weather the storm. They saw the warning, they took cover, and they made it out, sometimes not fast enough before I tore through their homes. Destruction followed in my wake and I would be left standing alone and using that as yet another reason to stay stuck in my behaviors. Abandonment, rejection, fear. And I thrived on it. I loved my pit. And I was perfectly content living there. It garnered attention; even negative attention was feeding the beast.
7. So many people think they have all the answers to our problems, that in their own selfishness the universe revolves around them. Is that who you are listening to? Or are you letting the Holy Spirit guide you?
8. Are you acting the same way toward another (giving them unsolicited advice, thinking your way is better, etc) when YOUR ideas are threatened?
Oh, what a tangled web we weave, a terrible cycle of harsh expectations and resentment. Bildad believed that Job was suffering because of the sin in Job’s life. Basically…”Job, you got what you deserved.”
9. How many of us feel that way about people in our own lives? Are we judging others or are we loving people where they are?
Bad stuff happens to good people. PERIOD. No one is exempt. Hello!!! JESUS SUFFERED!!
***NEWSFLASH*** IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT ME. My entire purpose for being on this earth is to help others come to the table of Jesus and eat the Bread of Life. I used to be so SELFISH and self contained that I couldn’t see past other people’s mistakes and look at their purpose through the eyes of their pain. There IS purpose in ALL our pain. It’s not for me to judge people and put my own restrictions and expectations on what I think they might deserve. I’m going to be flat out honest here…it’s HARD, especially when people hurt me, to look past the current circumstance to see them the way God sees them. But it is what I am called to do. I am so guilty of this; even today I struggle with this very thing. In the past, it was easy for me to deflect my own behavior by passing judgment on those that surrounded me. It’s called the “Blame Game” and it’s a very dangerous game to play. All it does is hurt the person who is not really at fault. It’s time to step up to the plate, love my brothers and sisters in this world, and stop acting so foolishly. Time to look in the mirror at who is really the problem.
10. None of us are God, so why do we try to be? Who are you hurting when you judge?
I had to come to the realization that I am not perfect, nor will I ever be until I see Him face to face in heaven. I had to loose myself from old ways of thinking and fully surrender everything in my life to Him. Today, I hold onto promises. I hold onto truth. I hold onto hope. In the eyes of the world, I will always be an addict, I will be labeled as a terrible mother, and I will be rejected by a society that lives in shallow boxes, but God…God says that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. He says that I am the head and not the tail. He says that He will never leave me, nor forsake me. God says that He will repay me for all the years that I have squandered, the years the locusts have eaten. He says in His awesome Word that I am worthy, I am loved, I am blessed, I am equipped for His service, and I am FREE! He says those things of all of us!!!
Job 18:5-21 basically states one thing…the wicked will suffer. PERIOD. So Bildad is saying that Job is wicked or else he wouldn’t be suffering. That is so wrong.
11. Are you suffering? Are you wicked? NO!!!!
We might be suffering but it is for the sake of Christ and for His Glory alone we are supposed to! If you follow Christ, and are an ambassador in chains for the sake of the Gospel, bring on the Pain! He doesn’t waste a single tear! You are not wicked! You are RIGHTEOUS!
12. Who do you trust?

To further your reading, and to dive a bit deeper, consider this from:
Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
1 Peter 4:8 – Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
Romans 8:1-4 – Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Romans 14:10-13 – You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. 11 It is written: “’As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.’” 12 So then, each of us will give account of ourselves to God. 13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling blocks or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.
Proverbs 13:9 – The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out.
Psalm 37:23-24 – The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; 24 though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord uphold him with his hand.
Powerful Scriptures that all deserved a spot in this devotion today. I do believe they speak for themselves!
