Today is my birthday. I never would have believed in a million years that I would make it this far in life. I never thought I would see this day or even have hope for a future. I would have NO HOPE and be not encouraged if I didn’t follow the right King….JESUS.

tree8Judges 9:7-15 – When Jotham was told about this, he climbed up on the top of Mount Gerizimand shouted to them, “Listen to me, citizens of Shechem, so that God may listen to you. 8 One day the trees went out to anoint a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Be our king.’ 9 “But the olive tree answered, ‘Should I give up my oil, by which both gods and humans are honored, to hold sway over the trees?’ 10 “Next, the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and be our king.’ 11 “But the fig tree replied, ‘Should I give up my fruit, so good and sweet, to hold sway over the trees?’ 12 “Then the trees said to the vine, ‘Come and be our king.’ 13 “But the vine answered, ‘Should I give up my wine, which cheers both gods and humans, to hold sway over the trees?’ 14 “Finally all the trees said to the thornbush, ‘Come and be our king.’ 15 “The thornbush said to the trees, ‘If you really want to anoint me king over you, come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, then let fire come out of the thornbush and consume the cedars of Lebanon!’

tree7I have made a lot of things “king” over my life. A LOT of useless things that offered no protection and no security; things that had the potential to burn me to the ground. I “honored” things that were bad for me, that led to my fall and destruction. I had no real KING. Life threw me one curve ball after another and I used eveything but the kitchen sink as an excuse to stay stuck.

Those who expect God to hear their prayers must be willing to hear reason, to hear a faithful reproof.

tree4It’s better to be useful than to be great. There was no occasion at all for the trees to choose a king; they are all the trees of the Lord which he has planted and which therefore he will protect. Nor was there any occasion for Israel to talk of setting a king over them; for the Lord was their king. Why did they not offer the cedar tree or the pine tree a place as king for their loftiness? Because those that bear fruit – such as the olive, fig, and fruit trees – for the public good are justly respected and honored by all that are wise more than those that affect to make a figure. The fruit trees still refused. What a lesson in humility. Those that are put in places of public trust and power must resolve to forego all their private interests and advantages, and sacrifice them to the good of the community. Being preferred has the possiblity of creating pride and laziness which spoils the fruit altogether. So what happened? They chose a bramble. A bush that was thorny and hurtful, a bush that had no fruit whatsoever on it’s branches. They chose something that would immediately, through it’s own vain attempt, coerce the people and entice them with empty promises.

What a lesson! I am in AWE of God’s Word today! I almost lost my LIFE by trying to be “king” over my own habitat and livelihood. I made myself the center of it all and forgot where I came from and WHO saved me. Am I useful? Or do I strive to be great? WHO IS YOUR KING?

Isaiah 2:12-16 – The Lord Almighty has a day in store for all the proud and lofty, for all that is exalted (and they will be humbled), 13 for all the cedars of Lebanon, tall and lofty, and all the oaks of Bashan, 14 for all the towering mountains and all the high hills, 15 for every lofty tower and every fortified wall, 16 for every trading ship  and every stately vessel.

Pride is our biggest stumbling block to a solid relationship with God. On what or whom are we basing our security and prosperity? We must place our hope and trust in God alone.
