I used to be a chicken. I would run at the first sign of encroaching trouble. I would then fill myself up with all the bad things in order to separate myself from the hard tasks ahead. It kept me sick and suffering in my own fear and selfishness. I would pray “foxhole prayers”, prayers to get me out of situations when I was unwilling to do anything to change my own stance. It still happens to me sometimes, but I am better equipped today to recognize the enemy and combat evil with truth and become willing to change. Today, I am willing to remove the destruction that comes in so I CAN take a stand against the enemy when he comes in the back door dressed as all I ever wanted.

stand6Joshua 7:10-13 – The Lord said to Joshua, “Stand up! What are you doing down on your face? 11 Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions. 12 That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction. 13 Go, consecrate the people. Tell them, ‘Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow; for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: There are devoted things among you, Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them.’”

stand9To consecrate means to “associate with the sacred”. It means I have to remove all things that are hindering me. It means I have to change my current associations. I shouldn’t associate with my sins any longer, I should associate myself with the Word of God. My “devoted things” are my behaviors, my thoughts, my actions; anything that I put above God and anything that I don’t go to Him about. It’s anything I try to do in my own strength. It’s destructive. It keeps me from blessings. It’s keeps me from God. I do NOT want Him turning from me because of my own disobedience.

To further your reading, and to dive a bit deeper, consider this from Genesis 4:6-7 – Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

stand5Having sin in my life does make me angry, but it’s because I let it in. God gives me chances to right my wrongs and try again. He even ENCOURAGES me to do just that. I combat the enemy by ADMITTING my mistakes and doing everything I can to change my behavior to line up with the Word of God. It makes the enemy MAD when I start speaking life and praying over my situations and he goes running right back to where he came from! PRAYER IS POWERFUL!
