resolution1It’s another New Year, another new resolution that MIGHT last a week. Which diet should I go on? I need to go join the gym today! Watch me! I’m going to be a workout fool! I’m going to clean out all those rooms and start fresh! Maybe a new coat of paint? Should I start running every morning? No more fast food for ME! What about those nasty habits? They need to take a HIKE!! I’m going to start going to bed at 9pm and get more sleep! That will help as I eat healthier! I’m going to start saving more money so next Christmas I won’t be DEAD BROKE! NO MORE SODA! I’m going to learn a new language! I need to stick to my new and improved budget! This new calendar I have is going to keep me organized! Why do we do that to ourselves? Set unrealistic expectations and then beat ourselves over the head when we don’t match up? Why do we roll with the crowd instead of just standing on the Word of God?

resolution2Is part of your New Year resolution to gain freedom in Christ? Have you written down that which has you in bondage? Are you journaling every day about what is taking place in your life? Are you planning on spending time in your prayer closet? Do you have a reading plan set in place to read not just parts of the Bible that justify your erratic behavior, but the WHOLE Bible?

I’m going to do my best to take us through the entire Bible in a year as the Lord gives me words of encouragement to share with you all. I hope that you will come along with me on this full circle journey! We will cover Genesis – Deuteronomy in January, Joshua – 2 Samuel in February, 1 Kings – Nehemiah in March, Job – Ecclesiastes in April, Song of Songs – Ezekial in May, Daniel – Jonah in June, Micah – Malachi in July, The Gospels, Matthew – John in August, Acts-Galatians in September, Ephesians – 1 Timothy in October, 1 Timothy – 1 Peter in November, and we will finish out the year with 2 Peter – Revelation in December.

resolution3Today, we will start at the beginning, where all good things start:

Genesis 1:1-4 (NIV) – In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.

Light meets the dark at our humble beginnings. We, as humans, are the ones who put such grand expectations on what should follow our starting point. You see, God didn’t create the universe and our world out of NEED. He did so out of LOVE. So what we think we need is really miniscule in comparison to what God wanted from us from the beginning, which is Love. If I allow myself time to focus on the “What-If’s” and get stuck in the “Should-Haves”, I will forget the purpose set before me and I will choose to look solely to my past for answers. I WILL GO INSANE and look for solitude in dark places. If I choose (AGAIN…It’s all about my choices) to focus on the fact that I am NEVER alone, my past does not define my present, Jesus LOVES me, I stand on a solid rock, fear is not of the Lord, and God works everything out for those who love Him; then paranoia, fear, and depression must FLEE at the name of Jesus. I CHOOSE TO BELIEVE THE TRUTH.

The Spirit of God hovers over our watersin the beginning, even when the waves of uncertainty are so high and we are barely treading in the open sea. If God is Love, then Love is there, like a beautiful cloud forming over the tumultuous sea. Feeling as if you are back at the beginning of something is a fine place to start, because Love exists at the beginning of everything. Right?

resolution4We sometimes go through seasons and processes, some more painful than others, some shrouded by darkness, but remember, in the beginning, there was light, there was love, and there was God. Therefore, going backward, then, is no longer an option because the beginning is somewhere we have already been before, however uncomfortable it may feel. We despeartely need to lay aside the expectations of what “should” be, what life “should” look like, and find gratitude in the beginning because Light is there, Love is there, and God is there.

We were all bathed in innocence when our lives were formed and we came into the world. Fellowship with our Awesome Creator God was broken due to our willful disobedience. God has a plan for all of us, and the beginning is always a good place to start. Don’t be discouraged today. Rest is at the starting line. Take a deep breath before venturing out and know that He already knows the process. In the beginning is where all good things happen.

To further your reading, and to dive a bit deeper, consider this from John 1:1-5 – 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

John was referring to Jesus, the ultimate sacrifice that was with God in the beginning. In Him was our life, our love, and our hope!
