1 Peter 5:6-9 – Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

river3I was thinking last night as I fell into a deep sleep about nature. I am moved by creation itself and my mind sometimes has difficulty comprehending how the earth and everything on it just ebbs and flows. Life flourishes in many forms, from the algae on a pond to our highest level of existence and intelligence…a human. Nature itself completes a revolution in the circle of life everyday.

Imagine being a gazelle, wandering the African plains under a hot sun. There is no fear, only joy and peace as you bound through the tall grass alongside your family toward water. You have no worries, no anxious thoughts as you meander through the world on a course for mere survival. Nothing of the world causes you to question the divine creation in which you live, but you find yourself cautious and alert.

resist4In the tall grass, just beyond your view, lies a predator in wait. He is patiently seeking his next meal, overcome by a fierce hunger. The lion’s watchful eyes scan the horizon as thousands of your kind leap through the air in joyful rhythm and praise to their Creator unseen. He is looking, as he prowls the plains, for a weakling that he can pounce upon. However, God sees and God protects the weak and the lost.

So, little gazelle, stand fast and flee temptation. Don’t stop to gaze upon the lion with peaked curiousity. Be determined to reach the water which will cleanse you and keep you safe. Guard your heart, remain humble, lower yourself and your thinking, and admit your need for holy and eternal deliverance. When you are weak, God is strong! He will lift you up and set your feet on solid ground!
