Luke 22:60-62 – Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
Sometimes I get stuck in selfish PRIDE and I weep at the recognition of that powerful, deceptive, and secret sin of my own. There was a time when I had left a responsibility of mine for a short while. In my absence I thought, “No one can do it like ME!” Boy, was I so wrong. As I stepped through the door expecting one thing, I got a new perspective instead. I had expected chaos, disorder, confusion, and messiness. As I turned each corner, I would cry at the beautiful jewels of love and respect, workmanship and gratitude at each turn. What I realized is that in my vacancy, other people were allowed to use their gifts uninhibited by my demands and they brought forth beauty out of the ashes I had left behind.
I had become so rigid in my ways that I snuffed the hearts of the souls around me and ran in my own strength to the point of sheer mental exhaustion. The sin in my life spread like cancer and grew…unchecked. Pride, pride, and more pride affected everyone who came in contact with me. So I wept.
That day I found pure joy in the faces of those who were excercising their gifts. Caring for one another is way more important than personal gain. I have to TRUST God to accomplish the tasks and not rely only on SELF. When in self, my growth track becomes too narrow and I become thickheaded, no longer learning and unable to teach.
Observing the leaves on the trees yesterday made me think long and hard. They are so green and vibrant for nearly 8 months here in the south. Like the sin that catches fire in my life and spreads, so do the leaves as they change color before quickly falling off the tree to be blown away by the wind. Falls WILL come, winters will follow suit, and new leaves will grow in the springtime of life. The Tree of Life, the tree on which Jesus died for my sin (such as pride and arrogance) will continue to stand.
Proverbs 16:18 – Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.
