I used to LOVE throwing myself Pity Parties! I would make sure everyone around me knew about it and they were ALL invited. I would put up decorations in that little pit, put balloons around the mud walls of my hole, and ring in my party with a BANG! It was miserable. My balloons always ended up deflated, the cake would be stale, and no one would come. What a sad, lonely little pit. I learned at Jacob’s Well that I could be pitiful, or I could be powerful, but I couldn’t be both. When all the focus is on “Me” there is a big problem. God wants me to work on myself to THE INTEREST OF OTHERS.
Philippians 2:3-4 – Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
What does that mean? Let me tell you. When things don’t go my way, Satan has a hay day! He immediately begins to whisper lies to me about how cruelly I have been treated. He says “Look at this injustice. You deserve better than THAT.” And then I begin to take something that God intended to be given to others and turn it in on myself. SELF-PITY. When I choose to focus on the wrongs (false perceptions) then I forget to see the blessings that are right in front of me being offered to someone else. That is OK! That is their blessing! Mine is just around the corner if I can keep from falling the in pit and hanging out there.
Isaiah 42:18-19 – “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
The past is 1 second ago. And another second ago, and another. So, when I read this verse, I don’t see the PAST (long ago), I see what just happened. And right this very second (not the one that just passed) God is doing a new thing for me! I can hang out in the wilderness and have my own party, or I can see the new thing that is Christ in me! I then will rejoice with those around me and offer thanks to the Lord for all He is doing in my life and the lives of those close to me. I will walk down a new street that doesn’t have a hole in it and I will be much happier!
1 Thessalonians 5:11 – Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
Gosh, if everyone did this, it would be utopia; however, we live in a fallen world where jealousy, envy, self-righteousness, and fear bind up people from seeing themselves for who they really are. I can do my part, I can stay out of poor, pitiful me and I can have celebrations with those who have every right to celebrate! It’s a new party!! And Jesus is there, balloon in hand!
